NEW STRUCTURE

RATIONALE FOR CHANGE

In an ongoing attempt to improve coaching standards within England a review of current courses has taken place over the last 12 months. The review has made recommendations for Coach Assessment, courses, revalidation, licensing and tutor / assessor training.

General Findings regarding Coach Assessment

The current Coaching Structure, which was put together with a great deal of thought and effort, would appear to be exceptional. However, the following issues were found:
Current structure is intellectualised, paper driven and too complicated,
The assessment process is inconsistent across awards (at best only 40% of Level I candidates are assessed),
The quality of tutoring & assessing needs attention
More emphasis should be placed on “how” to coach rather than “what” to coach.
Courses & resources should be more coach and tutor friendly
The real challenge lies in improving Coaches skills and competencies rather than what range of drills to use.

Following these initial findings a Coaching Course Task Group (CCTG) was put together involving Professional staff (Evan Crawford, Mark Harrington, Matt Carter & Dan Brown) and Volunteer staff (David Ball and Andy Dixon) to start to develop a new Coaching structure. At the same time the Continuum Review group developed a new pathway for young players

The new continuum has driven the timescale for developing courses within the revised coaching pathway.

Timescale for courses:

The courses between Introductory (CLA, Tag & Mini/ Midi) and Level 2 will be developed from the bottom up. Meanwhile a separate task group are looking at Level 3 & Level 4 courses under the guidance of Evan Crawford (Head of Community Coach Development) and Kevin Bowring (Head of Elite Coach Development) and Des Diamond (Coaching Development Manager)

Level 4 Ready September 2003 Existing courses

It is important that coaches continue to attend existing courses. Qualifications will be easily transferable to new structure  The information below attempts to explain the new structure. The Introductory courses are designed to improve the coaches of the different modified games; the rest of the structure is mainly, but not exclusively, designed for the 15 a side coach.

We hope you agree that the changes are well thought out and "coach centred". Our overriding aim has been to improve the quality of coaching, and ultimately playing within the community game.
