News from the County

Saturday 10th May

Essex came a very unlucky 13-12 runner up in the final pool round of the County Championship Plate against Leicestershire.  In brilliant weather matched only by the performance of both teams Essex just failed to pull off the surprise win of the day against a much fancied Leicestershire XV.

Saturday 19th April

Southend creep up to sixth place with an 11 - 24 win over Blaydon with one more match to go Southend look assured of another season as our highest placed league club.  Barking's fight for survival succeeds as they earn a vital win over League leaders Mounts Bay 15-14 - as news came through that Clifton had also secured a win over Havant there were a few worried faces about but Barking end up a point ahead of Clifton and so live to fight another season in National Three South.

With a close win over Eton Manor, Chingford confirm their third place in London 2 North just two points behind second place Staines who beat Woodford 12-19.  Unfortunately Thurrock's brave win over Letchworth fails to make any difference over their bottom place and face for the first time ever, London 3 Rugby next season - but with this performance whose to say they won't bounce back next season.

In London 3 NE Westcliff look forward to London 2 next season with a polished 25 - 14 win over Romford and Gidea Park.  With Chelmsford loosing to second placed Diss it was touch and go for survival the the Essex club as they anxiously waited for  Ipswich's result from Norwich.  15 - 11 to Norwich kept Chelmsford just 1 point ahead of Ipswich who are now doomed to relegation along with Colchester who were beaten 13 - 46 by Rochford.

Mersea Island and Sudbury gain promotion to 3NE whilst Campion go down to Essex 1.  There are no other relegations from this league which next season moves to being a 12 club league.  Replacing Campion will be Dagenham the Champions of Essex 1

15th February 2008

Bancroft win John Adler 2nd team cup for the first time.  Bancroft dominated the first 60 minutes of this final of the Junior 2nd team cup.  Winning the first half 13-0 Bancroft never looked in danger of loosing this match as they added another 22 points after halft time before Millwall began to respond.  With almost 70 minutes of the game gone Millwall at last managed to score a converted try but Bancroft still had time to respond with a further try of their own winning the Cup for the fist time by 42 points to 7.

Bancroft Claim the John Adler 2nd XV Junior Cup

President Mike Drinkwater presents the John Adler Cup to Bancroft,

A second half revival fails to save Southend as they fall to Blackheath 41-33 but at Barking, the magic returns as they turn the tables on fourth placed London Scottish with a 34-5 win which moves them up into tenth place.  Chingford went to a top of the table battle at Staines where  despite their usual workmanlike performance they came second loosing 25-10 to a very determined Staines.  Chingford now occupy third place on equal points with Staines.  Woodford did their best to assist Chingford as they took the league leaders to a 22-22 draw.  At the other end of the table Thurrock remain in the relegation zone with Tabard after both clubs settled for a 18-18 draw.

A 38-14 win over ~Chelmsford puts Westcliff further ahead in London 3 North East as neighbours Rochford give them a helping hand by beating second placed Diss 21-13 so putting themselves just four points behind the Norfolk club.  Elsewhere Harlow found themselves wanting as Brentwood took the honours 35-12.

7th January 2008

The County U20's earn a  17 - 17 draw away to Middlesex in the RFU U20's County Championships.  They next face Surrey at Woodford RFC on Sunday 17th February KO 2pm. so if you can, why not come along and give them your support.

25th January 2008.

The County congratulates the following U16's players who, following the inter Divisional Schools and Clubs trials, have been selected to join the England U16 Development squad.  We wish them the very best of luck in the following sessions.

Jamie Bache, Kit McCartney, Sam Stanley.

There are 17 London & SE players who have been selected in the 60 that form the England Development Squad. This squad does not guarantee selection for the final England Squads and other boys may still be called in.
Following the development camps the England Squad and an England A Squad, each comprising 26 players will be announced to take part in an international festival.

21st Janaury 2008

Did "Go Play Rugby work for you?"  It certainly did for Braintree.  On a  positive note they have gained four more players to the vets side who used to play for other clubs, and for the final two home games of the season they are going to be putting out  "TWO" vets sides.  Mardy's Bar in Braintree have kindly sponsored Braintree Vets for another set of shirts to help push this along and hopefully keep it going in the 2008/2009 season.  Do you have a success story to tell?

Sunday 20th Janaury

Chris Sigsworth, formerly the RDO for Middlesex brought over the Swedish u16, U18 development squads and their U21's.  With matches palyed against Coopers Conurn U16 and u18 and the U21's Playing against our U20's it was a busy and hectic day for all concenred.

19th / 20 TH January

Sorry I was away this weekend learning all about the Follow up to the Go Play Rugby Campaign.  More news on that later.

15th January

Rochford get drawn against Dover (Away in the next round of the EDF Energy Senior Vase.  Dover are currently ling third in London 3 SE and recently beat Diss 16 -23.  The close margin shows that a Rochford could go into the next round.

12th January 2008

Cup weekend - so no league Rugby apart from Westcliff who played a rearranged match against Ipswich and remain on top of London 3 NE with a 20 - 13 win,.  Diss, who have a game in hand against Norwich to play are 6 points behind but were beaten in the EDF Cup match by Dover 16-12 and will soon be back concentrating on the chase.

Rochford go marching on to the next round of the EDF Energy Senior Vase with a 19 - 25 win over Tottonians at Totnes.  They now go into the draw with clubs from London division and the South West which still includes the team Hartspury College who beat Billericay in the final of the Intermediate Vase at Twickenham last season

Essex Cup results to follow....

5th January 2008

National League Two - Not quite the start Southend wanted as they succumb to a second half onslaught at Redruth.  Being just 3 points behind at half time 20-17 Southend found themselves struggling as Redruth piled on another 20 points for a 40-17 win.  Southend remain in seventh place just two points ahead of Cambridge.

National League Three South - West Country Rugby was also the downfall of Barking this weekend as they went down 18-40 to Lydney.  With only Clifton and Luton below them matches against these two clubs have even greater importance on Barking's hopes of remaining in this league.

3rd January 2008

The funeral of Mike Reilly the 19 yr old from Chelmsford RFC who died from Meningitis the weekend before Christmas, took place at Our Lady Immaculate Chelmsford.  Tributes were paid to Mike who had been a member of the club from an earlage as well as playing for South Woodham and being a County representative player. The family were joined by several hundred friends in a service to celebrate Mike's life

Referees

As part of the recruitment drive to attract non society referees into becoming society referees and to educate those who wish to remain non-society referees, I am putting together ‘Referee Education Evenings’.

I am putting a calendar of events together and would like to begin advertising before the end of October so your help would be appreciated.

The sessions will be based upon the modules within the referee department’s new Continuous Referee Development Award, a 10 module award that can be done in or out of referee societies and by society or non society referees.

I am hoping to enlist your help with the following

To help me organise these events – venues especially – I invite clubs to host an evening – they will obviously benefit over the bar…

The modules last 2 hours max and some can be delivered in the classroom and some outside. In the first instance we will run sessions on Scrum and Tackle.

There is a minimal admin charge of £5.00 for all those who attend - preferably payable in advance with the application form attached.

February RFF Grants:

Eton Manor
Chingford
Southend

Saturday 1st December

Sunday matches do not obviously suit Southend as they loose their weekend match at Nuneaton 16-12.  Going into the break 13 - 7 down Southend came back to win the second half 3-5 but with the penalty count against them then ended up 5 points short of a win.

Appalling weather conditions in Clifton meant that Barking's away match was postponed.

London 2 North - Despite a 33-0 win over Letchworth, Chingford remain in Second place on points difference to Staines who beat Tabard 18-59, with Tring also on points difference in third place, having beaten Thurrock 19-32.  Eton Manor are in fifth place having beaten eighth placed Woodford, in their Essex derby match 15-20.

Tension mounts in London Three North East as Brentwood so very nearly upset the league leaders Westcliff, who just managed to etch out a 21-20 win.  Harlow, in fourth place, are the toast of Westcliff, as they beat second placed Diss 26 - 24 thus opening up a four point gap for Westcliff at the top of the table.   Third placed Rochford are still waiting in the wings as they come away from Norwich with a 14-52 win and in fifth place is Saffron Walden who this week beat Braintree 13-6.  Romford &* Gidea Park remain in mid table with a 24-32 win over bottom club Colchester, and there was better news for Chelmsford this week as they overcame Ipswich 17 - 13.  Westcliff travel to Diss next week in the next round of the RFU EDF Intermediate Vase in what has the prospect of being a truly fascinating contest. (NB this is shown as a 1.30pm kick off on the Diss RFC web site)

Mersea Island with a whopping 74-0 win over Crusaders and South Woodham Ferrers beating Upminster 17-35 are evolving as the promotion hopefuls in London Four North East.  Both teams are level on points with Mersea's big win over Crusaders tipping the balance in their favour.  Sudbury remain in third place despite loosing to fourth placed Basildon 29 - 18 who are just ahead of Upminster on points difference.  Beccles stay in sixth place with a 32-10 win over bottom club Campion and Billericay swap places with Canvey island after beating them 12 - 0

Essex Leagues: There is no change in the first four places in Essex 1 with all four top clubs winning their matches over the weekend.  Maldon, in first place beat Bancroft 27-22.  The Ilford Wanderers revival continues as they beat Upper Clapton 0 - 23 and remain in second place.  Dagenham, in third place go from strength to strength, and in preparation for their EDF Junior Vase match next weekend against Wisbech, scored a 10-37 win over Millwall.  In fourth place are Old Bentwood's who this week beat Writtle Wanderers 24 - 10 whilst mid table Wanstead beat bottom of the table East London 32 - 12.

Thames head up Essex Two with a 25 - 5 win over Kings Cross Steelers.  In Second place is Clacton, who this week beat Burnham 7-45.  Old Cooperians lie in third place following their 5-21 win over Witham, and lastly PegasusPalmerians creep up into fourth following their win over Loughton 0-17

In Essex Three Brightlinsea received a home walkover over Ravens, May & Baker drew with Runwell Wyverns 13 - 13  and Stanford le Hope beat Ongar 27 - 17.  Runwell, followed by May & Baker head up this league with Stanford, Brightlingsea, Ongar and Ravens  following on behind.

Sunday 25th November
Essex County RFU U16's finally came good at Trailfinders RFC when they met Middlesex RFU in the final round of graded matches for London Division Selection.  Despite giving Middlesex a 10 point start in the first half, two tries, a conversion and a penalty in the second half gave Essex a well deserved win 10-15.  Following this match there are ten players who have been asked to go forward to the London Divisional Trials on the 2nd December at Old Albanians ..... Saturday 24th November

For those involved in Cup rugby last weekend it was back down to league business this weekend with many crucial matches on the fixture cards.  Southend needed a win over mid table rivals Wharfedale and duly obliged with a 32 - 21 win keeping them firmly in mid table of National Two.  Barking in National Three South were desperate for a win and they too came up with the goods with a 12-10 win over Rosslyn Park.

Chingford's reign at the top of London 2N came to an end as they lost 10-7 to Eton Manor.  However, they remain on level points with Staines in first place and Tring in third place all on 16 points.  Eton Manor's win brings them up to fifth place. Woodford came across the league leaders Staines and were unable to assist Chingford, going down 46-14 to slip to eighth place whilst Thurrock's loss to Letchworth 15-7 puts them down into ninth.

Westcliff and Diss remain the front runners in London 3 NE.  Westcliff beat Romford 5-44 whilst Diss beat Chelmsford 54-3.  Third placed Rochford recorded another win over Colchester who they played last week in the EDF Cup.  This week they again won but by a greatly reduced margin of 28-12. Harlow remain in fourth place with a 12-29 win over seventh placed Braintree and Brentwood remain in ninth following their 12-42 defeat at the hands of Saffron Waldon.

Mersea Island and South Woodham Ferrers head up London 4NE.  With Mersea loosing to Basildon 18-22, South Woodham Ferrers were able to draw level on points with a 40-6 win over Beccles.  Local rivally prevailed in the derby match at Canvey where Canvey surprised Upminster with a 19-13 win.  Billericay may be in the wrong half of the table but they so very nearly took the points against Third placed Sudbury just loosing out 14-12.  At the bottom of the table Crusaders scored a 41-0 win over Campion to leave Campion now holding up the rest of the table.

Essex 1 leaders Maldon came out in front of a  large crowd at Ilford but could not catch up on Ilford's early lead and went home having lost the match 18 -10 but stay ahead of Ilford on points difference.  Dagenham kept ujp their winning ways with a 22-5 win over Wanstead adn remain in third place.  East london came so close to scoring their fist league points of the seaon but were just beaten 13-15 by Upper Clapton.  Old Brentwoods kept their fifth place with a 20-12 win over Millwall.

Sunday 18th November
Essex County RFUW  hosted the annual junior inter county festival at Harlow Rugby club.  With teams from Oxfordshire, Leicestershire, Middlesex, Eastern Counties and Hertfordshire taking part this was a well organised and enjoyable days rugby despite the bitterly cold wind.  In the U15's competition the Essex team lost just one crucial match against Herts who were the eventual winners. In the U18's competitions an exciting final match against arch rivals and friends saw Essex run out winners by 5 points to 0 to retain the trophy for the second year in succession.  During the presentations Phil Robson, Essex RFUW programme manager, thanked the teams for taking part, Essex County RFU for their support and Harlow RFC for their magnificent organisation in hosting the festival.

Essex County RFU U17's Cup Rochford were beaten by Westcliff 0-15.

Saturday 17th November
Eton Manor and Thurrock go out of the RFU EDF Intermediate Cup.  Eton Manor lost to Dorking 20-15 whilst Thurrock just lost to Old Colfeians 19 - 22.

In the EDF Senior Vase Rochford bounced back from their defeat last week in the league by Westcliff with a very convincing win at Mill Lane beating Colchester 5-60.  Diss beat Brentwood 34-0, and Westcliff continued their run of wins with a 7 - 27 win over Old Elthamians from London 3 South East.  Joining Rochford and Westcliff in the next round is Romford & Gidea Park who beat Norwich 28 - 17.

At Central Park, Dagenham fought their way through to the next round with a 37 - 20 win over Surrey 1 rivals Croydon.  With seven regular first team players not available through injury the replacements will give the selectors a headache in next weeks selection as they all gave such a credible performance.  Also going through to the next round are Ilford Wanderers who pipped their South London rivals, Old Olavians 27 - 23.  Ravens lost out to Old Gravesendians 41 - 18 and Writtle Wanderers suffered a similar fate loosing against the Eastern Counties 1 league leaders Wynmondham  54 - 5.  Our only other club left in the competition, Wanstead handed Cantabrigians a home walk over.
