Lions: Jason Robinson may be English rugby union's most successful recruit from League, but Phil Larder must run him close.

Recruiting the tough Lancastrian as the game's first "Adviser on Defence" was a key moment in the rise of England to world champion status under 2005 Lions head coach Sir Clive Woodward.

Larder applied his experience of League defensive patterns and techniques to the unique challenges of union with unparalleled success. As well as helping England to the 2004 Rugby World Cup and RBS Six Nations Grand Slam in 2003, he was also a key influence on Leicester 's domination of the club game around the turn of the millennium.

With the former Great Britain RL coach drilling their defence, the Tigers went unbeaten in the Zurich Premiership from May 1999 to May 2001 and became the only back-to-back winners of the Heineken Cup.

A former Director of Coaching for Rugby League in England , Larder also spent seven years as assistant coach to the Great Britain side. He is no stranger to New Zealand either, having taken charge of the League version of the Lions there in 1996. He has been England assistant coach since 2000.

2004: October appointed Coach to Lions 2005 Tour
